Here’s 5 women who changed the tech world, and we’re extremely proud that women continue to show their talents to contribute to a better tech world these days!

  1. Ada Lovelace: The world’s first computer programmer:

Ada’s mathematical talent shone through in her very early life, and her skills and interest led her to work with Charles Babbage, who was the inventor of the “Analytical Device”, though never created, but was the first element of a modern computer. Lovelace’s work, therefore, gave her the title of the first computer programmer.

Fun fact: Alan Turing used Lovelace’s notes as a form of inspiration to create the first modern computer in the 1940s!

  1. Hedy Lamarr: The inventor of wifi:

Many of you might not know that Hedy created the “secret communication system” which was intended as a way to set radio-guided torpedoes off course during the war. Her idea inspired Wi-Fi, GPS and other Bluetooth-related technology nowadays.

  1. Annie Easley: The NASA rocket scientist:

Annie was seen as a trailblazer for gender and racial diversity in STEM. She was one of the only four black employees at the Lab at NASA. Annie’s work on the Centaur rocket project at NASA was the foundation for space shuttle launches in the future. She had also contributed to numerous programs advocating for gender equality in STEM.

  1. Radia Perlman: The internet inventor:

Those of us who use the internet owe Radia Perlman a long overdue thank you! Radia’s invention of the algorithm behind the Spanning Tree Protocol was critical in making the internet possible today. Her work focuses on networks self-organizing and moving data, as well as internet traffic. Dell EMC is lucky to have her still!

  1. Karen Sparck-Jones: The information science pioneer:

Karen’s work is one of the most highly cited in her field. She invented and developed Inverse Document Frequency, a factor that evaluates how important a word is to a document, which is now standard in web search engines and used to rank a document’s relevance to a search query.

There are also many other women who contributed to and are still changing the tech world nowadays. We all owe them a long overdue thank you, and we want to use March as the time when we show our appreciation for the women around us, especially those who work in STEM!
